Newfoundland and Labrador
St. Georges Bay and Codroy Valley areas
Marine terrace and tombolo, The Gravels, Newfoundland.
The terrace beyond the lagoon is formed of gravel that was deposited by meltwater at the junction of two glaciers, about 13 000 years ago. At that time, the sea level was 27 m higher than at present. Since then, the sea level has fallen, leaving the old delta high and dry. Now, however, sea level is rising, and waves are eroding the terrace margins, moving the gravel to form the two 'tombolos' that join the peninsula to the mainland.
