Hanging valley with waterfall, Trout River Pond, Newfoundland.

The great cliffs and waterfalls around the troughs and fjords of Gros Morne National Park mark the juncture of two major levels of the landscape that developed during the period of crustal uplift. Here, an older high-level landscape is marked by lakes, which occupy the upper part of an ancient broad valley. When the old landscape was lifted up and a new one developed at a lower level, the upper reaches of the valley were left 'hanging' above its lower course, creating a 400 m high waterfall.
