1950-05-05 Red River, MB 100 1 Flood; Winnipeg and Red River Valley, Manitoba; May 5 to 25; 1 dead, 107 000 evacuated (one-third of the city), 5000 buildings damaged, $100 million in damages. a major flood occurred in the months of April, May and June of 1950; melt of a thick snow cover caused the Red River to reach flood levels by April 22; a heavy rainfall in early May caused the river to stay above flood stage for 51 days; the water reached 4.6 metres in depth in low lying areas; 60 000 people were forced to evacuate as one tenth of the city of Winnipeg was covered in water; a volunteer pump operator drowned; damage estimates in 1957 dollars were $125.5 million. 1974-04 central and southern MB 14.5 0 Flood; Manitoba; April and May, 1974; major flood in the province resulted in $14.5 million in damages; severe flooding occurred in central and southern Manitoba on practically all rivers and river systems; many people had to be evacuated; although the natural discharge of water was greater than the flood in 1966, the city of Winnipeg avoided major damage due to the Red River Floodway, the Portage Diversion, and the Shellmouth Dam, which were flood control measures set-up to reduce flooding in Winnipeg. 1993-07-25 Winnipeg, MB 500 0 Flood; Manitoba; July 25 to August 14, 1993; the City of Winnipeg was declared a disaster area because of flooding caused by prolonged heavy rainfall; three severe rainstorms in a five-week period during July caused sewer backups and other extensive damage to homes, power lines and agricultural land infrastructure in Winnipeg and surrounding areas including Selkirk, Springfield and Beausejour. 1997-05 Red River, MB 815 3 Flood; Winnipeg; the Assiniboine, Red and Winnipeg Rivers, Manitoba; April - May, 1997; spring melting of a heavy snow pack caused widespread and prolonged flooding along the Red River Valley in North Dakota, Minnesota, and southern Manitoba. In Canada, over 7000 military personnel were employed for 36 days to assist in preventing flood damage and in relocating 25 450 evacuees; communities affected include Emerson, Rosenort, St. Jean Bapiste, Morris, St. Adolphe, Nutimik, Portage la Prairie, Ste. Agathe, St. Norbert, Letellier, Dominion City, Scanterbury, Halstadt, Brunkild, Domain, Sanford and Winnipeg; 3 people drowned; cost $815 million. 1999-04 Melita, MB     Flood; Melita MN; Apr 1999. Melita, Manitoba was threatened by the largest flood in the area since 1976. The Souris river outflow rose to 169.8 cubic m/s of water compared to its normal outflow of 4.25 cubic m/s. The floodwaters spread to at least 2 km across the valley bottom.
